Dancing among Bamboo Pole (Tiao Zhugan)
This is the Bamboo Pole Dance, a team activity that can be regarded both as a sport and as a dance. On every festive occasion or joyous event, people of the Li ethnic group will gather together in their flamboyant folk costumes to dance, and it is not uncommon for these celebrations to go on throughout the night.
The preparation is simple - only 10 bamboo poles are needed. Two 5 meters (16.4 feet) long poles are used as the 'pillow' poles. These form the two sides of the dance area at a distance of 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) apart. The other eight thinner poles that are 4 meters (13 feet) in length are laid across the 'pillow' poles creating four parallel rows rather like a window frame. The ends of these are held by eight team members facing each other in pairs. With the accompaniment of music, those holding them open and close the poles rhythmically as they slide them on the 'pillows'. Dancers jump and hop between the poles while singing and performing various mimes such as knife grinding, sieving grain, capering, genuflecting, etc. This display, especially for the girls with their lightness and delicacy, appears much like flittering butterflies. Those who fail to keep up with the rhythm will be nipped between the poles and will be politely expelled from the dance. The one who avoids the poles until the very last round will be lifted up seated on the bamboo poles to the jubilation of the onlookers.
